Fun fact – Medicine use during the high season in the Dutch seaside resorts – 14-05-2024

With the warm weather it’s time for a fun summer fact.

The Dutch seaside resorts have a strong seasonal pattern: many tourists in the summer and much fewer the rest of the year.

Did you know that this fluctuation is even reflected in medication use?

The large group of tourists in the high season causes a significant peak in a selection of medicines for acute use.

Note:
– This concerns the medication: Emergency contraception (G03AD**), Nitrofurantoin (J01XE01 – bladder infections), Augmentin (J01CR02), Diclofenac (M01AB05)
– This concerns the following seaside resorts: the Dutch Waddeneilanden and the following places in Zeeland: Renesse, Domburg, Zoutelande, Scharendijke, Oostkapelle, Burgh-Haamstede, Vrouwenpolder.
– National concerns the whole of the Netherlands minus the aforementioned seaside resorts.
