Research into the environmental impact of medicines

It is becoming increasingly clear that the use of medication also has an impact on the environment. Eva van der Heide and Anna Stohr (Amsterdam UMC), together with colleagues, are conducting research into the environmental impact of medicines. The aim of the research is to calculate the environmental impact of the hormonal coil and the combined oral contraceptive pill. This is a wide-ranging study that examines production (often abroad), environmental impact, energy consumption and transport, right through to the breakdown of the medicine. Such research into the environmental impact of medication may, in the long term, play a role in decisions regarding the use of medicines.

Farminform is pleased to contribute to this research with its data, which provides a detailed insight into medicine use in the Netherlands. This is a fine example of collaboration between organisations on a socially relevant issue, with the aim of jointly advancing both healthcare and the environment.
